Overnight Sleeping Resolution will come before Council
December 14, 2011
Together with our partners at Multnomah County and in the faith community, we're committed to long-term solutions to homelessness, but we're also looking for options to address immediate needs in our community.
This week, we'll file a resolution that will establish a pilot program to allow overnight sleeping, within certain guidelines, on the site of religious institutions and limited other sites in Portland. The resolution is based on a similar program in Eugene, Oregon.
At a time when the need for a safe place to sleep far exceeds our shelter, housing and service resources, this pilot will help us address a pressing humanitarian crisis.
The resolution, co-sponsored by Commissioners Leonard and Satlzman, will be heard by Council next week and will go into effect immediately once passed.
