Council approves overnight sleeping pilot program
December 21, 2011
Today, the Council voted 3-0 in support of a resolution to establish a one-year pilot program that will allow small-scale overnight sleeping at certain locations around Portland. Together with our partners at Multnomah County and in the non-profit and faith communities, we're committed to long-term solutions to homelessness, but we're also looking for options to address immediate, urgent needs in our community.
Our program is modeled after similar initiatives that have been successful in Eugene and Seattle. A group of partners will closely monitor the program and return to Council in a year with a report on the program's successes and challenges.
