Attorney General John Kroger announces settlement of fair housing claims in Portland
February 24, 2012
Oregon Attorney General John Kroger announced today a settlement in a fair housing case in Portland.
The agreement settles claims of alleged discrimination at a Southeast Portland apartment complex. Under the agreement, policy changes announced today will apply to more than 8,000 apartments. The management company will pay attorney fees and will additionally compensate affected families.
Last year, we announced the City's first ever Fair Housing Action Plan, echoing our community's call for strong commitment to ensuring compliance with fair housing laws. Drawing on the excellent work of a committee that looked at barriers to housing in our community, it combines:
- Enhanced education of tenants and landlords
- The creation of a new Fair Housing Advocacy Committee
- Regular testing of landlords
- Enforcement of our fair housing laws
We applaud Attorney General John Kroger's commitment to enforcing fair housing laws in Oregon. For more on our plan, click here.
