City Council welcomes future leaders

May 9, 2012

Nick was pleased to join the City Council today in welcoming three groups of outstanding young people.

The Ainsworth Spanish Immersion Program’s second grade class toured City Hall, and observed part of the Council meeting. The second graders enjoyed seeing City Hall’s artwork, the Council offices, and the location of the 1998 time capsule buried beneath the first floor.

Nick read a Proclamation on behalf of Mayor Adams, proclaiming May 9, 2012 as a day of honor and recognition for the Lincoln High School Constitution Team. Lincoln’s team placed first last month in the National Finals of the We the People: the Citizen and the Constitution competition in Washington, D.C. The team was led to City Hall in style by the Lincoln High School drum line.

City Council welcomed the 2012 Rose Festival Court as well. For over 100 years, Portlanders have enjoyed the Rose Festival, welcoming summer to the City of Roses. In 2011, the Festival was named the Best Festival in the World by the International Festivals and Events Association. The young women on the Court must demonstrate good citizenship, leadership, and poise, and act as good representatives for their schools and community.

We’d like to extend our thanks to all these outstanding young people for joining us this morning.  They all have very bright futures!

The future in capable young hands
