Celebrate the Healthy Portland Initiative
May 29, 2012
By David Nguyen
Join Nick, Portland Parks & Recreation, and community members at a celebration of the Healthy Portland Initiative at the University Park Community Center this Thursday, May 31, starting at 4 pm.
The Healthy Portland Initiative serves as a model for parks departments across the country to embrace their growing and important role in community health and chronic disease prevention.
Last year, PP&R partnered with food & beverage providers to begin serving healthier drinks and snacks at our local community centers. The change is part of an effort to provide healthy options for the community.
Nick will also try his hand at cooking healthy food with kids at the event to help promote a new pilot program called Grow Afterschool which will give kids the opportunity to plant and harvest crops, taste seasonal vegetables, prepare healthy recipes, and even go on field trips to local markets and farms.
We will continue working with our community partners to ensure that all Portlanders have access to healthy foods every day.
