Portland's newest natural area
April 26, 2013
Yesterday, Nick was proud to join members from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and City of Portland partners to celebrate Portland’s newest natural area - the Foster Floodplain.
The dedication of the Foster Floodplain kicks off local celebrations between Earth Day and World Environment Day on June 5. World Environment Day is annual event that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action.Portlandwas chosen this year by the UNEP to be the host city for this special day.
The Floodplain’s innovative design takes a natural approach to reducing local flood risks that also improves fish and wildlife habitat along Johnson Creek. The project restored over a half mile of the creek for native salmon, trout and lamprey.
In so many ways, we have learned that healthier watersheds ultimately mean healthier communities.
Thank you to all our community partners who made the Foster Floodplain a success.
Don’t forget to celebrate World Environment Day on June 5!
