Honoring the past and recommitting to a more just future

August 26, 2013

Last Saturday, Nick was proud to March with Senator Jeff Merkley, former Oregon State Senator Avel Gordly, Oregon State Representative Lew Fredrick, and other community members at the 50th Anniversary of the March onWashington.

The anniversary march, held in downtown Portland, commemorated the March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. As The Oregonian reported, "Ironically the same issues that compelled the first march, jobs, police brutality, housing, health care, equality are the same pressing issues of today."

Over the last 50 years we have made steady progress, but we also recognize that our work is far from finished. Today too many people in this great and prosperous country suffer from the same inequalities present 50 years ago. Let us continue on in the words of Dr. King that “as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead.”

Together, let’s march ahead -- always moving forward, guided by the dream of a more perfect union.
