Green infrastructure makes for cleaner water

February 19, 2014

Portlanders made a great investment in the Big Pipe!

Since Friday, Portland has seen over three inches of rain, and the combined sewer overflow (CSO) control program has been working exactly as it was designed to – keeping sewage out of the Willamette River. Before the CSO program and the Big Pipe, only 1/10 of an inch of rain in 24 hours would cause millions of gallons of sewage to overflow into the Willamette.

Thanks to our green stormwater management infrastructure, that no longer happens, and our city and nature remain healthy and clean.

Johnson Creek was also flood-free this weekend.  The new Foster Floodplain Natural Area reduces Johnson Creek’s common flooding from once every other year to once every six to eight years.

Learn more about the Big Pipe and CSOs by visiting the Bureau of Environmental Services’ website.

No Johnson Creek floods or Willamette River sewage discharges after weekend rainstorms
