East Portland's budding soccer stars get a new field

August 5, 2014

Yesterday, Nick was proud to join Commissioner Fritz, Mayor Hales, and the Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Star players to celebrate the grand opening of Montavilla Park’s new futsal field.

Our MLS All-Stars have taken the city by storm this week, and they wanted to get together and give back to their host, the city of Portland.

With the help of Portland Parks & Recreation, MLS organizers secured a site: an old tennis court in East Portland. MLS then partnered with the Portland Timbers, Adidas, and Wells Fargo to build the generous, $200,000 outdoor futsal court in Montavilla Park.  Futsal is a variation of soccer played on a smaller field.

The futsal court is a much-needed, state-of-the art soccer field, built with re-purposed turf from Providence Park.  That means that our future soccer stars in East Portland now get to play on turf once graced by the Timbers!

Monday’s celebration was a hit. Young East Portland soccer fans and players got to meet (and take selfies with!) America’s best soccer players – and bend it like Beckham on their brand new turf field.
