Expanding Portland’s green infrastructure

October 2, 2014

The Portland Expo Center has a new stormwater green wall!

Filled with soil and vegetation native to Oregon, the incredible 30 by 60 foot green wall manages stormwater runoff by absorbing water into the living wall.

Free standing and composed of steel and aluminum, the sustainable structure doesn’t have water pumps. Instead, water flows freely by gravity through different channels.

“Green” facilities like bioswales and this stormwater wall help manage Portland’s heavy rainfall – and reduce the amount of water that drains into our sewer system. Thanks to Portland’s robust environmental programs and investments in our sewer infrastructure, our local waterways are cleaner and safer for people and fish.

The innovative green wall was funded and built by a team of public and private agencies. The Bureau of Environmental Services was proud to partner with Metro, GreenWorks, and the Expo Center to help bring this wall to life. The partnerships were made easy through a shared vision for environmental advocacy and expanding Portland’s green infrastructure.

Check out the stormwater green wall! It’s located outside the Expo Center’s Hall E.
