Hello everyone! Last Thursday I had a lunch date with Commissioner Nick Fish, along with his long-time friend, Kay Toran, and her intern Katie. Kay is the Executive Director of Volunteers of America, Oregon – Nick used to sit on the VOA Board of Directors. We had lunch at Higgins, one of Nick’s favorite lunch restaurants.

It was very nice hearing Nick and Kay tell their stories to each other. They both told stories how they were in the White House. Kay represented the women of Oregon, and Nick attended the Medal of Honor Ceremony given to Army SGT Henry Johnson. SGT Johnson was an African American soldier who fought under the French flag in World War I, because our armed forces were segregated. Johnson showed acts of heroism by risking his life to save his fellow soldiers.

Kay’s intern Katie is a summer intern like me. She is majoring in marketing and minoring in history at University of Portland. She is also the editor-in-chief of UP’s newspaper “The Beacon.” Kay is a very interesting women, she is amazing and bold.

Overall, I had a great lunch date with Nick, Kay, and Katie!!!
