Spomenik & Brakpan
August 18, 2015
Local photography gallery, Blue Sky, is hosting two alluring photographic exhibitions called Spomenik and Brakpan.
Spomenik is by Belgian photographer Jan Kempenaers. For three years, Kempenaers traversed the former Yugoslavia in search of World War II spomeniks (“monuments” in Serbo-Croatian). Many of the monuments were destroyed by the former government. Those that remain have fallen into despair, and Kempenaers captured them beautifully during his archaeological, photographic journey.
Brakpan is a black and white exhibition by South African photographer Marc Shoul. He takes viewers to Brakpan, a small mining town just outside of the South African capital, Johannesburg. Shoul presents an intimate portrayal of town’s transition from prosperity to economic hardship.
Blue Sky is partially funded by the Regional Arts & Culture Council’s (RACC) General Operating Support program. RACC provides grants to local non-profits, artists, and schools.
Both exhibits run through August 30. Check out RACC’s website for more information.
