Industry of Aloha

June 22, 2016

The Portland Building’s newest art installation, Industry of Aloha, is a print media art exhibit consisting of vivid and bright Hawaiian-inspired flora.

The artist, Kanani Miyamoto, is a Hawai`i native who lives in Portland. Her eclectic art installation consists of paint and block prints on paper. She combines familiar paintings of tropical fruit and flowers with, on closer inspection, often strange and unusual elements.

Miyamoto hopes to use her artwork to bring attention to how the tourist industry in Hawai’i has negatively impacted traditional Hawaiian culture and the environment.

The Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) sponsors the Installation Art Series. Each installation is selected through a juried process and often brings to light new perspectives and modern takes on traditional art. Each year, the series reserves a few exhibits for art students, such as Miyamoto, to help introduce emerging talents in the Portland area.

Industry of Aloha runs now through June 24 in the Portland Building’s lobby. Check out RACC’s website for more information about the exhibit.
