Bukola Kioki Presents “Journey Just Come” at the Portland Building Installation Space, August 15.

August 16, 2016

The Portland Building’s newest art installation, Journey Just Come (JCC), is an interactive and thought-provoking art exhibit that combines words from the Nigerian language of Pidgin, with vibrant and colorful flags.

Bukola Kioki, the mastermind behind JCC, was born in Lagos, Nigeria. As a teen, she migrated to the United States to study art. Her piece is meant to embody the immigrant experience and the effects of living between two cultures.

To visualize what she calls “A kind of magnetic disorientation one might feel with the visual stimulation of a new city,” Kioki has created a set of brightly colored flags with printed Pidgin sayings that cover the walls of the installation space. She used words from Pidgin— a simplified form of communication that combines a couple of Nigerian languages with English, to inspire conversation about what it means to experience a new culture.

The Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) sponsors the Installation Art Series that is selected through a juried process, and brings to light innovative art from an array of emerging Portland artists.

Visit the RACC’s website for more information on the installation space and exhibit.
