Nick was Principal for Almost a Day at Jefferson High School
October 27, 2016
Yesterday, Nick served as “Principal for Almost a Day” at Jefferson High School’s Middle College for Advanced Studies.
Principal for Almost a Day is sponsored by All Hands Raised, a local non-profit that partners with community stakeholders to encourage students’ success in Portland and Multnomah County.
Nick shared Principal duties with Susan Shugerman, Assistant Vice Provost for Education Outreach and Collaboration at OHSU (Oregon Health Sciences University). Together, they shadowed Principal Margaret Calvert. As principals, Nick and Susan met with staff, teachers, and coordinators from Self Enhancement Inc. (SEI).
SEI supports at-risk urban youth by building relationships and offering a place to turn to when others aren’t available. Each student is paired with an SEI Coordinator who is available 24/7 to bring out the best in each student, even if it just means listening. Mission-driven non-profits like SEI help increase Oregon’s graduation rates.
Nick was delighted to learn that Jefferson’s 2016 Mock Trial Team proceeded to State Competition. Although they did not take home the gold, making it to State was a huge win.
Then, Nick joined more than fifty local leaders at Warner Pacific University for lunch to debrief on their day as Principals.
