Council Celebrates Community
December 13, 2017
This morning, Council honored two remarkable leaders in our community. Nick introduced the 2017 Steve Lowenstein Award, which was awarded to Reverend Dr. LeRoy Haynes and Reverend Dr. T. Allen Bethel. They serve as co-chairs of the Albina Ministerial Alliance.
The Lowenstein Trust Award honors attorney, author, and civil rights activist Steve Lowenstein. The Lowenstein Trust recognizes Portlanders working to improve the lives of low-income people in our community.
Rev. Haynes, Senior Pastor at Allen Temple CME Church, and Rev. Bethel, Senior Pastor of Maranatha Church, have been a constant force for good in our community. Congratulations!
Today, Council also recognized older adults in our community with a proclamation celebrating the 50th anniversary of the federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act.
Federal law protects individuals aged 40 and above from employment discrimination based on age.
Special thanks to our partners – Age-Friendly Portland and Multnomah County, Elders in Action, AARP Oregon, and Portland State University for their deep commitment to a vision for Portland as a city that is welcoming and accessible to people of all ages and abilities.
