Honoring the Life and Legacy of Mayor Vera Katz
January 29, 2018
Yesterday, Nick attended the celebration of the life and legacy of former Portland Mayor Vera Katz at the Portland Art Museum.
Hundreds of Oregonians gathered to pay their respects. The program included a video and four testimonials.
A former three-term mayor, and the first woman Speaker of the Oregon House, Vera was remembered as a visionary leader who helped to shape modern Portland. Her legacies include the Portland Streetcar, the Eastbank Esplanade, the Lan Su Chinese Garden, the River District, and South Waterfront.
Nick was joined by his wife Patricia, son Chapin, and friend Julie Vigeland.
Although Nick and Vera never served together, they traveled together to New York City after 9/11 on the “Flight for Freedom.” Nick especially admired the way she dealt with cancer, as a public official and as a private citizen.
