Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage
May 2, 2018
Today, City Council proclaimed the month of May to be Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
The Hapa, Asian, and Pacific Islanders of Portland (HAPI) Affinity Group, comprised of City employees, brought the proclamation to Council. The group will host events for employees and the public to celebrate the history, culture, and traditions of Pacific Islanders, Native Hawaiians, and Asian Americans in the United States.
The Council celebration featured a traditional dance performed by local Polynesian dance troupe Teva Oriata and remarks by members of the Pacific Islander community.
Betsy Quitugua on the Fish Team, who identifies as Chamorro and Japanese American, and serves on the HAPI leadership committee, was the host for the festivities.
