Sam Hutchison is the Director of the City of Portland’s Fire and Police Disability and Retirement Bureau. He administers the Disability and Retirement fund as well as oversees the administration of disability, death and retirement benefits for the Portland firefighters, police officers and their survivors.
Sam has a combination of over 20 years of management experience and strong technical background in both disability claims management and pension benefits. His prior work experience includes 26 years with Standard Insurance Company where he managed the company’s claim department, led significant organizational change efforts and developed strong relationships with customers and peers. Before that, he worked as a paramedic in Arizona. His education includes a BS from Oregon State University and an MBA from Arizona State University.
Moving into the public sector has given Sam the opportunity to learn new ideas, a passion of his, and to work with a small city bureau that has a huge impact on the City of Portland.
Sam lives in Portland with his wife, dog and son’s family.
