IPR Oversight of Officer-Involved Shootings
Under City Code IPR is authorized to act as a monitor in all officer-shootings and in custody deaths. Upon being notified of a critical incident by the Police Bureau’s Captain of Professional Standard Division, an IPR Director will go to the scene of the incident to monitor the administrative investigation conducted by Internal Affairs The IPR staff member will receive a briefing on scene and attend a more detailed “Chief’s Briefing” usually held a day after the incident. As with all administrative investigations, IPR must approve the investigation conducted by Internal Affairs and the recommended finding by a Police Bureau commanding officer.
