Community responds to flyer branding people with disabilities as threat to democracy

Following news of a flyer targeting people with disabilities being circulated in Portland, 75 people responded to a request by the Portland Commission on Disability (PCOD) for who has received it and what neighborhood it was in. Fourteen city neighborhoods have been littered with the flyer that accuses people who vote and receive cash disability payments of heralding “the end of the republic.”

The graphic provided depicts the neighbors affected and indicates the number of reports. The real count is even higher since some emails received by PCOD mentioned that other neighbors and entire areas received the flyer that was left sometime in the night on neighborhood porches. Those neighborhoods where additional Portlanders received the flyer but exact numbers were not provided are indicated by a plus (+) sign.

Callers and email reports have expressed considerable concern and are disturbed by its message. People with disabilities who have seen it say that they are alarmed by the possibility of an attack directed towards them. One caller said that she was up until 11:00 p.m. on a Saturday in her living room with a full view of her porch and awoke to find the flyer there at 6:00 a.m.

As noted on Thursday, August 8, the number noted in the flyer of people with disabilities receiving benefits varies in each neighborhood. The numbers range from 9 to 23 and several emails included photos of the flyer.

The Commission welcomes further responses from the community, including new reports of receiving the flyer and if there are any sightings of the promised posting of names where they can be seen in public. As of August 13, 2013, no instances of posted names have been reported to PCOD. Please email if you have received or have any details about the flyer campaign.
