Disability Events Acting as Partners in Resistance to Ableism and Violence workshop sponsored by Portland United Against Hate Community Events Join Patricia Berne, Co-Founder, Executive and Artistic Director of the documentary “Sins Invalid” for a workshop analyzing the social construction of disability. The workshop is free and open to the public. Lewis & Clark's Center for Community Engagement, Room 105 in Rogers Hall, 0615 S.W. Palatine Hill Road Above is the logo for Portland United Against Hate. Lewis Clark College holding 'Acting as Partners in Resistance to Ableism and Violence' workshop Join Patricia Berne, Co-Founder, Executive and Artistic Director of the documentary 'Sins Invalid' for a workshop analyzing the social construction of disability on Friday, May 4, from 1 to 5 p.m. This workshop is part of the Portland United Against Hate training series and is free and open to the public. Participants will identify its relationship to both interpersonal and institutional forms of violence, and explore the current iterations and historical underpinnings of violence against people with disabilities. From this starting point, together the group will undermine this dominant understanding of disability as pathology by examining the medical model of disability; looking at the social model of disability through a Disability Justice lens; and reviewing principles of alliance as reflected in Disability Justice principles. The workshop will embody the ways in which non-disabled community members can support disabled community members who are being isolated, targeted and/or scapegoated through individual reflection, pair work, small group work, role plays and multiple stopping points for questions and answers. Sins Invalid is a disability justice based performance project centralizing disabled artists of color and queer and gender non-conforming artists with disabilities. Patricia Berne's training in clinical psychology focused on trauma and healing for survivors of interpersonal and state violence. Her professional background includes offering mental health support to survivors of violence and advocating for LGBTQI and disability perspectives within the field of reproductive genetic technologies. Berne's experiences as a Japanese- Haitian queer disabled woman provides grounding for her work creating 'liberated zones' for marginalized voices. She is widely recognized for her work to establish the framework and practice of disability justice. 2018-05-04 13:00:00.0 2018-05-04 17:00:00.0 0 0 0

Disability Events Hearing Loss Association of America - Portland Chapter May Meeting Community Events HLAA Portland Chapter meeting to discuss its future and hear about low-cost financing for hearing aids. Snd floor conference room, Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital Building Number 2, 1040 Northwest 22nd Avenue Above is the Hearing Loss Association of America's Portland Chapter logo. HLAA Portland Chapter meeting to discuss its future and hear about low-cost financing for hearing aids The May meeting of the Hearing Loss Association of America Portland Chapter is Monday, May 21st at 6:30 pm at Good Samaritan Hospital. It will be in the 2nd floor conference room in Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital Building Number 2, 1040 Northwest 22nd Avenue at Marshall Street. The HLAA Portland Chapter Board -- had scheduled the annual election for this month's meeting, but have decided to postpone it. Although the call has been out for volunteers to run for the board and keep the group going, no candidates have stepped forward. Four current board members are willing to run again, and to continue organizing the monthly meetings, but not unless there are more candidates. At Monday's meeting, the discussion may be what to do about that. There have been thoughts about changing to a different meeting day and/or time or location, whether to stop inviting speakers and just have discussions among the members, and what members want to get out of the meetings. There is hope that the members are interested in continuing this discussion at an informal summer get-together. In addition to that discussion, there will also be a speaker from the NW Access Fund, The Fund is a nonprofit with the mission of promoting access to technology and economic opportunity for individuals with disabilities in Washington Oregon. They offer low-interest loans for all kinds of assistive technology devices and services. About 40 percent of their loans are for hearing aids and related assistive devices. NW Access Fund is relatively new to Oregon and is working to get the word out to those who might benefit from their services. They will tell more about their programs — and they want to get member input on funding challenges and suggestions for other outreach opportunities. The meeting will be real-time captioned (CART) and there is an induction loop amplification system (usable by wearers of hearing devices equipped with telecoils). ASL is not provided. See hlaa-or.org/portland-chapter.html for more info about HLAA-Portland. 2018-05-21 18:30:00.0 2018-05-21 20:00:00.0 0 0 0

Inner NE Events How Do Our Values Influence Environmental Policy? Community Events Free Community Conversation with Oregon Humanities Project on Values and the Environment Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods 4815 NE 7th Ave Please join us and bring your neighbors for this thoughtful conversation to unpack complex ideas and policies. Free! Free food! Description: Most of us would agree that natural resources and our surrounding environment have value, but what that value is—and how to protect it—are usually up for debate. Given competing interests and visions of the public good, how do we protect our common resources such as land, water, and air? Join philosopher Monica Mueller to explore our environmental values and question how those values are reflected—or not reflected—in current local, national, and global environmental policies. Please register here so we can plan to have enough for food and beverages for everyone! 2018-05-31 18:30:00.0 2018-05-31 20:00:00.0 0 0 0
