Mayoral candidates Jefferson Smith and Charlie Hales will be participating in a Candidates Forum hosted by the Portland Commission on Disability (PCOD) on August 10. The forum will be held from 12:30 to 2 pm in Room 2500A at the 1900 Building, 1900 SW 4th Avenue, in downtown Portland.
Nyla McCarthy, PCOD chair, will moderate the event featuring the two candidates running to become the Portland’s mayor in the November general election. She will open the forum and allow time for brief opening remarks from Hales and Smith before entering an hour-long question session. The questions will focus on issues and concerns of people with disabilities as related to the practices, policies and services of the City. There is time allotted for final remarks by the candidates before the end of the forum.
PCOD is conducting an outreach campaign throughout the community and calling on the public and organizations who have interests regarding people with disabilities to attend and hear what the city’s next chief executive thinks the city will do to address people with disabilities concerns. Statistics indicate that at least 18 percent of the population may be identified as having a disability.

Connecting Communities wants to hear the community’s answers to: “How has the Americans with Disabilities Act changed your life?
The community is invited to come, share its stories and listen to guest speaker Dean Westwood at the Connecting Communities July General Membership Meeting where there will be a celebration of the 22nd Anniversary of the ADA. The meeting will be Thursday, July 26, from 2 to 4 pm, in Room 2500B at the 1900 Building, 1900 SW Fourth Avenue, downtown.
The new Chair of the National Governors Association, Gov. Jack Markell announced his chair’s initiative, A Better Bottom Line: Employing People with Disabilities, (click title to access link) which aims to increase employment among individuals with disabilities. Specifically, the initiative will focus on the employment challenges that affect individuals with intellectual and other significant disabilities and the role that both state government and business can play in facilitating and advancing opportunities for these individuals to be gainfully employed in the competitive labor market.
The City of Portland has announced that a public hearing will be held regarding its intent to request a finding of equivalent facilitation for the tactile warning strips Portland Streetcar has installed at the streetcar platform edges. The hearing will be held on July 31 from 12:30 to 2:15 pm in Council Chambers at City Hall, 1221 SW Fourth Avenue, in downtown Portland.
The City is seeking a finding for the Portland Streetcar stations regarding an alternate method of compliance with the 2010 Standards for Accessible Design which require that an accessible rail station have detectable warning surfaces at platform boarding edges. The standards require that detectable warning surfaces shall be 24 inches wide, extend the full length of the public use areas of the platform and shall consist of a surface of truncated domes as required.
Public comments will be taken at this public hearing. Any interested party may appear at the meeting and present public comments on this issue. Nominations are open for the Making A Difference Awards 2012 which will be presented October 23 at Connecting Communities’ fall event, “Branch Out.” The City honors individuals and groups making a difference in the Portland disability community every year at this event.
Anyone who knows a business, organization, individual or youth who deserves recognition for work that promotes equity; breaks down barriers, both physical and social; encourages the elevation of the disability community through employment, art, access or health, or other examples that may deserve recognition is encouraged to submit a nomination.
Nominations may be made on the form available at: http://www.portlandonline.com/oni/index.cfm?c=58963&a=402236. The form includes specifics about the nominating criteria and requires some basic information to be submitted, including an additional sheet that tells how the nominee exemplifies the criteria areas. The form also has information for submitting in person, by regular mail or email. The deadline for nominations is September 1, 2012.
The Interfaith Disabilities Network of Oregon (IDNO) is inviting everyone to a special showing of “A Place for All: Faith and Community for Persons with Disabilities” on Wednesday, August 8. The hour-long documentary will start at 7 pm at Independent Living Resources, 1839 NE Couch. Admission is free.
The video is a unique interfaith documentary, produced in conjunction with the New York Board of Rabbis, with support of an extraordinary range of faith groups including the National Council of Churches, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Islamic Society of North America, the United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ and the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops. It explores the courageous stories of persons with disabilities as they succeed in making their faith communities truly inclusive.
