The Portland Commission on Disability (PCOD) and the Connecting Communities Coalition (CCC) are hosting a celebration of the 23rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) at Portland’s City Hall this Friday, July 26th, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. The event’s theme is “ADA Moving Forward” with audience participation activities planned and ASL interpretation provided.
Live music will be provided by entertainer Camilla Rose and the ILR Music Collective in the City Hall Courtyard, 1221 SW 4th Avenue, along with invited speakers. Cake and light refreshment will be served inside City Hall’s first floor atrium area. Latin American treats will be sold by Micro Mercantes vendors, PDX Empanadas and Montiels Cocina.
Commissioner Amanda Fritz, PCOD Chair Joe VanderVeer, and CCC Co-chair Barbara Dirks are slated to open the celebration. Commissioner Fritz will read a proclamation and report on her work as a city commissioner regarding the ADA. She will provide an update on a project currently underway to make Waterfront Park’s Battleship Oregon Memorial accessible.
The event’s planning committee expects a large turnout to honor the ADA on the anniversary of its signing into law in 1990. Census data indicates that there are currently 58 million persons with disabilities in the U.S. Of these, over 38 million have a severe disability, indicating the ADA’s importance by specifically prohibiting discrimination and mandating equal opportunity for both employment and public services.

Family and Community Together (FACT) is offering several fun summer activities for families during August. FACT is a family leadership organization for individuals and their families experiencing disabilities, working collaboratively to facilitate positive change in policies, systems, and attitudes, through family support, advocacy, and partnerships. The first FACT Dad’s Night Out at Kennedy School's Boiler Room will be Tuesday, August 6, from 6 to 8 pm. Dads are invited to attend and connect with other dads who have children experiencing disability. The activity will be in the boiler room where there are pool tables and sports television. The Kennedy School is at 5736 NE 33rd Avenue in Portland.
Wilson Pool at 1151 SW Vermont Street is the location for FACT’s Family Swim Day on Sunday, August 25, from 6:15 to 8:15 pm. Lifeguards and flotation devices are provided. The pool is zero depth to 3 ½ feet with slides and a lazy river. There is also a water wheel chair to help make it fully accessible. Tables will be set up outside on the patio at 5:30 pm for those who want to bring their own dinners and eat together before the swim time begins! (FACT will provide beverages.)
An event featuring live Celtic music, food, fun and libations (Irish style) is being held on Sunday, July 28, by the Brain Injury Alliance of Oregon (BIAOR). The event will be at Maher’s Irish Pub, 353 SW B Avenue in Lake Oswego, with no cover charge.
BIAOR reports that Maher’s has a menu offering traditional Irish cuisine and a fine mix of excellent wines and brews. A portion of all proceeds will be donated to help fund BIAOR programs that are provided to those living with brain injury, their families and the professionals who serve them. Project Grant Program deadline is August 7 for awards up to $6,000
The Project Grant Program of the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC) provides financial support to Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas County not-for-profit organizations and individual artists for Project Based Arts Programming. Grants are awarded up to $6,000 and are available in three categories: Artistic Focus, Community Participation and Arts-In-Schools.
A project is a specific art presentation, exhibit or creation of work that is fully executed within a specified timeline and contains a public component. A project possesses artistic quality, imaginative scope and vision, and is fully executed within a specified timeline.
Deadlines begin August 7 for projects occurring in the upcoming calendar year. Deadlines for Arts-In-Schools are at a different time. For more information, please click this link on the RACC website.
Everybody has a story and there's an opportunity for people to share their memories and reflections. Multnomah County Library was recently awarded a grant from American Library Association (ALA) and StoryCorps to record and maintain an archive of people’s stories.
The grant provides for equipment that will record the stories of library patrons throughout the summer at Central Library. These recordings (40 minutes each in length) will be archived (with the storyteller's permission) at the Library of Congress and here at Multnomah County Library.
Each session will take approximately 75 minutes and the library will offer them on Sundays, Tuesday evenings, and Fridays from June through August in Room 2B at the Central Library. Volunteer Services will have facilitators working with patrons to record the stories.

The Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp’s (MHKC) sixth annual Walk, Roll or Stroll benefit will be Saturday, September 21, in Willamette Park at SW Macadam Avenue and Nebraska Street. Those interested are encouraged to register now and can find out more by visiting the MHKC website at www.mhkc.org.
For nearly 80 years, MHKC has partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to provide individuals with disabilities an outstanding overnight recreational opportunity in the Mt. Hood National Forest. One of the largest programs of its kind in the U.S., each season the MHKC offers a unique opportunity for more than 500 campers ages 9 to 35 to experience the outdoors in its fully accessible 22-acre campsite. Despite cognitive, developmental or physical disabilities that include Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down syndrome, Traumatic brain injury, and Cerebral palsy, the campers enjoy recreational activities adapted to their special needs -- adventure courses, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, cookouts, arts and crafts, swimming, dances, and river rafting
“Charting a Course to Empowerment” is a workshop being held on September 21 by the Hearing Loss Association of Oregon to help people with hearing loss navigate life through self-advocacy and technology. The workshop is from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm in the Community Health Education Center of the Salem Hospital, 939 Street SE in Salem.
The keynote speaker is Juliette Sterkens, AuD, who is the national director for Loop America. She recently participated with a presentation at the Hearing Loss Association of America 2013 Convention in Portland.

Independent Living Resources (ILR) is requesting artists to share their work for exhibition at its ILR’s annual “A Roll In The Park” street fair on September 27th. The second annual Roll in the Park Art Exhibition is ILR’s mission to build awareness through the sharing of art from the disability community and to create opportunities for independence by providing a business possibility through the selling of the artwork.
To create diversity in artist and artistic styles, the ILR selection committee will include three members of the disability community and two active equity community advocates. Individuals and groups who make a difference to the Portland disability community are honored annually with the Making a Difference Awards. This year, the awards will be presented at the Connecting Communities Coalition fall event, “2013 Leadership: Passion to Action,” on October 16.
The community is invited to nominate an individual, youth, organization or business that they feel deserves recognition for their service to the disability community. The nominations are now open on the City's Disability Program website. Further details are available on the site, including an online application form or a printable form to submit by mail or fax. The deadline for submitting nominations is September 1, 2013.
