Crime Prevention Coordinator Mark Wells says:
Karen is the perfect example of community policing and volunteering to promote public safety and community spirit. Karen is a retired Portland Police employee who contacted me about a year ago to form multiple Neighborhood Watches and one of the largest Community Foot Patrols in the City of Portland. She lives in the larger Manufactured Home Community in West Hayden Island and has organized and trained dozens of residents. She brings many of these foot patrollers and watch members to the HiNoon neighborhood association meetings and is the first and last to help set up and take down our North Public Safety Action Committee meetings. Karen has established and fortified strong partnerships with their local PPB Officers and continually communicates key information to me and PPB and other City and County safety agencies. I routinely receive emails from Karen and her Foot Patrol members highlighting crimes prevented and stories of members calling PPB and arresting criminals in and around their community. Karen is always a positive source of inspiration for me and her community and exemplifies the goals of ONI Crime Prevention everyday. It is my privilege and honor to award the Pennington Award to Karen Traughber from Hayden Island.
