Mark Wells, Crime Prevention Coordinator, along with Portland Police Detective Chris Gryphon, Officers James Fleming and Anthony Whitmore, trained eleven new Friends of RiverPlace (FRP) Community Foot Patrol members at the International School last week.
FRP members Karen Freedman, Laura Scott and Susan West have been working with the school for over a year due to concerns about safety that include bike theft, car prowls, drug use and sales. Kristen Stowell, an interested school parent, has volunteered to organize the school “arm” of FRP that will clean, beautify and patrol the Naito area.
FRP members dedicate over 30 volunteer hours a week to patrolling, reporting, cleaning and landscaping. FRP's two hard working Daves have continually worked to better this area. The results are impressive: visibility is improved, impacts from camping are reduced and the land is clean.
Friends of RiverPlace will soon have over 60 members with a significant number of supporters. Susan West sums it up best, "Citizen involvement works. IF you see something, say something, do something."
FRP has recently partnered with ONI Crime Prevention, PBOT, ODOT, Parks and Portland Police and Neighborhood Response Team.
