Feb. 22, 2017 - Program Updates

Welcome to the City of Portland Cannabis Program's first blog post! We'll keep you up to date about what we've been up to over the course of any given week or two.

Chalice Farms Extraction

  • A few weeks ago, City staff from multiple bureaus (including the Cannabis Program) toured Chalice Farms (pictured) and Green Gear Solutions, and met with cannabis business owners to learn more about their operations and their challenges, particularly with commercial building permit requirements. Many thanks to the Bureau of Development Services for coordinating the meeting and tour, and to everyone for coming together to better understand the interplay between City and State requirements and the cannabis industry. These conversations will be ongoing; with any new regulatory framework, honest and continuing dialogue between all parties is critical, and we look forward to having more of those conversations moving forward.

  • Related: We know that building and mechanical permitting can be a long process, not just for cannabis businesses but across Portland’s business community. Our office has been communicating closely with Commissioner Chloe Eudaly's office, other City bureaus, and the cannabis industry on how best to address these issues, and meetings like the the one in early February play a valuable role to inform those discussions.

  • Cannabis Program staff attended the Cathedral Park Neighborhood Association meeting on Feb. 15 to chat about our program and answer questions about Portland's cannabis regulation. We're always happy to provide information and answer questions for folks, so please reach out to us if you would like us to attend a neighborhood meeting or chat with your team!

  • We also attended the Cannabis Collaborative Conference on Feb. 15 and 16, joining the OLCC and hundreds of cannabis business owners and staff in what was a energetic event with lots of great conversations! While we try to be as accessible as possible from our office, it's always good to get out there and chat with folks at events like these.

  • The Cannabis Program redesigned our website over the last few days, putting all major topics on the front page in easy-to-view buttons, making the Cannabis Policy Oversight Team (CPOT) page more visible, and creating a page with information about retail cannabis delivery to consumers. If you have suggestions on how the site can be better, please let us know!

  • Speaking of the CPOT: their next meeting is Wed. March 1 from 6 to 8pm at Portland City Hall. We'll be discussing some program updates and updates about cannabis legislation at the state level. CPOT meetings convene once a month and are open to the public, so please check the CPOT page for future meetings, as well as recaps and materials from past meetings.
