For people with disabilities, accessing medical services can often be very difficult. For persons with hearing loss, communicating with doctors, nurses and other staff requires being prepared, especially when entering a hospital for a procedure. The Portland Chapter of the Hearing Loss of America held a roundtable discussion on Monday evening with members expressing communication difficulties with even audiologists and their staff. Every stage of engaging the medical community – making appointments on the telephone, communicating with clerical staff, speaking with physicians, etc. – showed a need for the professionals to develop a disability awareness.
To help people with hearing loss, the Lane County Hearing Loss Association of America Chapter provides instructions on how to prepare a Hospital Kit. There are downloadable documents to use for communication, signage, information cards, etc., that will help caregivers understand how to effectively communicate with a person who has hearing loss.
