Portland United Against Hate urges coalition members to come together as a community to stand up against hate and bigotry as we grieve the senseless stabbing and murder of two brave men and a third recovering in a hospital who put their lives on the line as they protected two Muslim women aboard a Trimet MAX train at the Hollywood Station late Friday afternoon, May 26.

In a statement from coalition member Muslim Education Trust, “When slurs of hate were shouted towards the Muslim women, three bystanders took it upon themselves to stand up against hate and bigotry, two of whom ended up losing their lives as a result of a brutal stabbing. We grieve and honor their lives, and extend our deepest condolences to the families of these victims and everyone affected by this traumatic encounter.”

This senseless tragedy occurred on the eve of Ramadhan, the holy Muslim month of fasting, self-reflection, and spreading of peace and communal unity.

The Southern Poverty Law Center reports the perpetrator was a known White Supremacist. The Portland Mercury reports the same individual was intimidating People of Color, Immigrants and Refugees on April 29 on 82nd Ave.

In an earlier statement this morning the Rev. Joseph Santos-Lyons, Executive Director of APANO and coalition member, stated, “This horrific violence requires us to reflect deeply on root causes, and is not an excuse to further militarize our communities. We believe in a world where everyone lives without fear of discrimination, exclusion or harm. May more Oregonians take action to interrupt hate and stand for love. In these terrible moments, we are reminded of our fragile humanity and the need to build institutions around the inherent worth and dignity of all people, institutions that function as systems of care.”
