Portland Parks and Recreation Director Mike Abbaté and Commissioner Amanda Fritz will be holding a special ribbon-cutting for the new accessibility improvements at Washington Park’s International Rose Test Garden on Saturday, August 26. The ceremony is at 6 p.m. in the Rosarians Garden section at 400 S.W. Kingston Avenue.
The ceremony will be followed by a free concert at the Washington Park Amphitheater, featuring Pilon d’Azucar (Cuban salsa, timba, Afro-Cuban jazz). The concert begins at 6:30pm.
This event is part of the daylong celebration of 100 years of roses at the Rose Garden, featuring free activities, music, arts, crafts, food, and fun for the whole family starting at 11:30am. Find more information at www.100yearsofroses.com.
Thanks to funding from the Parks Replacement Bond, this project removed accessibility barriers from the main promenade within the Rose Garden and improved connections to the parking lot, so that all Portland residents and visitors can equally enjoy this jewel for the next 100 years. Visitors with wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers can now easily proceed through the area by the Beach Memorial Fountain (where stairs once limited access!) and proceed all the way to the top of the Amphitheater. Concert goers arriving on wheels will enjoy the new viewing platforms set off the path for watching Amphitheater performances. More info at www.parksreplacementbond.org.
Parking is limited, so attendees are being advised to take MAX to the Zoo and use the Free Explore Washington Park shuttle. Another option is to park at the SmartPark garage on S.W. 10th Avenue and Morrison Street and receive free TriMet transit to Washington Park.
