HLAA-Portland October Meeting will feature presentation about service dogs
The Hearing Loss Association of America – Portland Chapter, will hold its October meeting at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital and Medical Center’s main building, Wistar Morris Room on the ground floor, 1015 NW 22nd at Marshall Street. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.
HLAA-Portland Member Jim Chasse, with his dog Mystique, will talk about having a service dog as a hearing assistant. Other membership business and information will also be addressed.
Monthly chapter meetings are real-time captioned (CART) and there is an induction loop amplification system (usable by wearers of hearing devices equipped with telecoils). ASL is not provided. Meetings are accessible by Tri-Met lines 15 and 77 and the Portland Streetcar, which all stop within two blocks. Kenny Fries to speak October 10 on his work, “In the Province of the Gods”
Kenny Fries will read from and talk about his work “In The Province of the Gods,” on Tuesday, October 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the World Affairs Council of Oregon, 1200 SW Park Avenue, third floor in the Hatfield Room. Fries is well-known for his teaching, writing, and activism in the area of disability rights.
The author embarks on a journey of profound self-discovery as a disabled foreigner in Japan, a society historically hostile to difference. As he visits gardens, experiences Noh and butoh, and meets artists and scholars, he also discovers disabled gods, one-eyed samurai, blind chanting priests, and A-bomb survivors. When he is diagnosed as HIV positive, all his assumptions about Japan, the body, and mortality are shaken, and he must find a way to reenter life on new terms.
He received the prestigious Creative Capital literature grant for In the Province of the Gods. He is the author of Body, Remember: A Memoir and The History of My Shoes and the Evolution of Darwin’s Theory, winner of the Outstanding Book Award from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights. Fries teaches in the MFA in Creative Writing Program at Goddard College.

Register to Vote in Multnomah County’s November Special Election by October 17th
A November Special Election is only seven weeks away on Tuesday, November 7, for eligible voters in Multnomah County. Local measures will be on the ballot and not candidate races. Ballots are scheduled to be mailed on October 18 with November 2nd indicated as the last day to safely mail return a ballot.
The voter registration deadline for this election is October 17 and only eligible voters who live within the boundaries of the local districts on the ballot will receive a ballot. Portland Community College, Alto Park Water and Hillsboro School are the districts on the ballot.
Oregon voters may register online at www.oregonvotes.gov/myvote or fill out a paper Oregon Voter Registration Card available at the elections office, public library, Oregon DMV, or post office.

The county’s Election Division website also offers information to check if one is registered to vote, voting opinions, a military and overseas voters’ guide and more election information.
Adaptive BIKETOWN Pilot will be open through October 29th for more fall cycling
Adaptive BIKETOWN expects to remain open through October 29th, so that means four weekends remain to rent adaptive bikes. Portland’s Adaptive BIKETOWN has been in operation since August to provide a bike rental service for people of varying abilities. This program is an extension of Portland’s bike share system.
Hand cycles, foot-powered trikes, multi-person bikes, and more are available at BIKETOWN’s bike shop partner Kerr Bikes, 1945 SE Water Ave., Building B (near OMSI, on the Eastbank Esplanade). Click here for more information about the location and hours of operation.
To ride Adaptive BIKETOWN, there are three steps: make a reservation at www.adaptivebiketown.com, get fitted, and bike! Services included with a bike rental are:
- Fitting for the available adaptive bikes
- Bike Helmet (included with bike rental)
- Mobility device storage during rental time
- Crate storage of service animal during rental time period

How to apply for City of Portland Jobs course being held on October 17
The City’s Bureau of Human Resources is conducting a course entitled “How to Apply for City of Portland Jobs” on Tuesday, October 17, in Room HR-1, on the Portland Building’s second floor, 1120 S.W. 5th Avenue. The class being held from noon to 1 p.m. is for the public and all city employees who are interested in gaining a better understanding of the City’s job application process.
Course participants will learn about differences between employment with the City versus private sector, the steps of how to apply by creating an account with the NEOGOV website, reviewing job announcements, submitting application materials, application communication, and interviewing types.

DACP presenting Nina G’s “An Evening of Comedy” on October 18th
The Disability Art and Culture Project (DACP) invites everyone to attend “An Evening of Comedy” featuring Nina G on October 18 at 7:30 p.m. DACP is bringing Nina G, The San Francisco Bay Area's favorite female stuttering stand up comedian (granted she is the only one) to perform at the Curious Comedy Theater, 5225 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Nina G is America’s only female stuttering stand up comedian and an author, speaker, and educator. She has made countless audiences laugh while educating them about disability issues and equality. Nina breaks down stigma, raises awareness and helps people reach their potential as allies to the Disability community. Nina works solo as a public speaker and educator and also tours with the comedy troupes The Comedians with Disabilities Act and Feminist Tendencies (an all-female comedy troupe aimed to empower diverse young women).
This event will support the second biennial Portland ReelAbilities Disability Film Festival. Founded in 2007, ReelAbilities is dedicated to sharing the stories, lives and art of people with disabilities. It consists of award-winning films of the highest cinematic and artistic quality and is hosted in cities across the country. October 18th will be the start of FACT’s Fall Session Dream Builders Alliance
FACT Oregon and Community Vision have announced the 2017 Fall Session of the Dream Builders Alliance. This is a collaborative program dedicated to the successful transition from youth to adulthood. It is a two-part program that involves the whole family.
Dream Builders Alliance, a project of Community Vision, Inc., is a grassroots program that provides empowerment, education, community, and transition opportunities to youth ages 16 to 21. This fantastic program works to connect all participants to post-secondary education, housing, and employment options. Participants also receive an introduction to adult support services that emphasize individual choice and full community inclusion.
Part one is “Family Education Series” where families learn about important resources regarding the transition from youth to adulthood. It is followed by part two, “Mentorship,” where young adults build valuable skills and relationships through thoughtful mentorship.
Limited spaces are available and seminars are from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from October 18th to November 29th and dinner is provided. Applications to be accepted October 16-30 for affordable housing at Garlington Place
Cascadia Behavioral Health is building an innovative, community-centered campus in the heart of Northeast Portland's historic Albina distict. Beginning February 2018, the campus will be home to Garlington Place, a new 52-unit apartment building providing affordable housing for Veterans and displaced North/Northeast Portland community members.
Thirty-one of the apartment homes will be reserved for households that apply through the N/NE Preference Policy. The Portland Housing Bureau will be accepting N/NE preference applications for Garlington Place from October 16, 2017 through October 30, 2017. The N/NE Preference Policy gives priority to housing applicants with generational ties to N/NE Portland (current and former residents of areas that were subject to high levels of urban renewal, and their descendants). Applicants can receive “preference points” based on their current or historic residency within an area where past City plans had a destabilizing effect on long-term residents, as well as the current or former residency of their parent/guardian or grandparent. PPR Adaptive & Inclusive Recreation program features DACP’s DancAbilities class this fall
Disability Arts and Culture Project’s DancAbilities class is being offered by Portland Parks and Recreation (PP&R) in its fall and winter course catalog. There are four separate class sessions for ages 13 and up scheduled from October into mid-March. They will be held on Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. in Centennial SUN School’s cafeteria.
Instructor Kathy Coleman will lead this fun and up-beat class. Whether a person dances every day or has never tried, it may be for them. The sessions will be October 4 through November 1, November 15 to December 6 (no class on November 22), January 10 to February 7, and February 14 to March 14.

People with disabilities urged to sign up now for public alerts about emergencies
The joint City of Portland and Multnomah County community emergency notification system is able to send phone, text/SMS and email alerts to addresses within Multnomah County. Emergency responders use the system to notify residents and businesses affected during an emergency. Their alerts often suggest safety actions such as staying inside or evacuating.
Everyone in Portland and Multnomah County should register to receive notifications at PublicAlerts.org. You should fill out the Additional Needs Registry section if you have difficulty with one or more of the following activities: getting around inside your home; getting in or out of bed or a chair; bathing; dressing; eating; seeing; hearing; speaking; thinking; understanding; lifting/carrying; using stairs; and walking.
By voluntarily including information about a disability or medical condition when signing up, you will”
- Receive warnings when an emergency happens and action you can take
- Provide your information to the 9-1-1 system
- Share this information with public safety responders in a major disaster
- Support local efforts to develop more inclusive emergency plans
- Get occasional emails with additional emergency preparedness information
Visit publicalerts.org/signup or call 503-988-3646 to sign up for the alerts. Include your disability or medical condition under the Additional Needs section. Your information will only be used for emergency and disaster-related efforts. Emergency management officials use the information to ensure plans reflect the needs and demographics of the community.
Every emergency is different. Public safety responders may be unable to get to or use PublicAlerts information in the event of an emergency. Please talk to family and your support network to develop a personal emergency plan. Visit the Portland Disability Program’s “Emergency Preparedness for People with Disabilities” website to learn more and find additional resources to be prepared for an emergency.
IDEA Business Forum to connect businesses with government agencies to hire PWD
The Inter-State Disability Employment Alliance (IDEA) is inviting companies to an “Invitation Only” Inter-State Business Forum. The invitation is for two representatives from a company to attend a free forum that is the first of its kind designed to connect local business colleagues and their best hiring practices and multiple Government Agencies that offer free services and programs designed to help companies fulfill their mission in hiring and retaining staff. This is an event for employers and is being held by employers and their community partners.
The event begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11, at the Vancouver Water Resources Education Center, 4600 SE Columbia Way, Vancouver. This is an opportunity to hear from local businesses who have hired workers with disabilities as they will share strategies and success stories. Local agency providers in Washington and Oregon will offer guidance and support to successfully hire an employee with a disability. Many questions will be answered with resources provided to help build and strengthen hiring teams.
It’ll be a great opportunity for some networking time too. To attend, please follow the link below to register and print tickets. There is limited seating and a limit of only two per company.
