The May meeting of the Hearing Loss Association of America Portland Chapter is Monday, May 21st at 6:30 pm at Good Samaritan Hospital. It will be in the 2nd floor conference room in Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital Building Number 2, 1040 Northwest 22nd Avenue at Marshall Street.
The HLAA Portland Chapter Board -- had scheduled the annual election for this month's meeting, but have decided to postpone it. Although the call has been out for volunteers to run for the board and keep the group going, no candidates have stepped forward. Four current board members are willing to run again, and to continue organizing the monthly meetings, but not unless there are more candidates. At Monday's meeting, the discussion may be what to do about that. There have been thoughts about changing to a different meeting day and/or time or location, whether to stop inviting speakers and just have discussions among the members, and what members want to get out of the meetings.
There is hope that the members are interested in continuing this discussion at an informal summer get-together.
In addition to that discussion, there will also be a speaker from the NW Access Fund, The Fund is a nonprofit with the mission of promoting access to technology and economic opportunity for individuals with disabilities in Washington & Oregon. They offer low-interest loans for all kinds of assistive technology devices and services. About 40 percent of their loans are for hearing aids and related assistive devices.
NW Access Fund is relatively new to Oregon and is working to get the word out to those who might benefit from their services. They will tell more about their programs — and they want to get member input on funding challenges and suggestions for other outreach opportunities.
The meeting will be real-time captioned (CART) and there is an induction loop amplification system (usable by wearers of hearing devices equipped with telecoils). ASL is not provided. See hlaa-or.org/portland-chapter.html for more info about HLAA-Portland.
