Top 10 Water Safety Tips

  1. Never leave a child unattended in a pool, spa, or open water and always watch your child when they are in or near water

  2. Teach kids basic water safety tips (how to float, proper life jacket fitting, areas to avoid, etc.)

  3. If swimming in open water areas, be familiar with underwater hazards, water temperature, and currents

  4. Wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket that fits snug and secure to your body when swimming in open water – Life jackets are not a substitute for supervision

  5. REACH or THROW aid to distressed swimmers – DON’T GO in after them

  6. Always remain within arm’s reach of young children in the water and avoid distractions

  7. Designate a Water Watcher to provide surveillance over swimmers

  8. If a child goes missing, look in the pool or open water area first

  9. Have a phone readily available to use in case of emergency

  10. Learn basic CPR
