Environmental Education for Teens

Portland Parks & Recreation engages the next generation of environmental leaders through volunteer naturalist training, paid work programs, science-based field trips and stewardship. 


Greenspaces Restoration & Urban Naturalist Team (GRUNT)

Volunteer for 10 Saturdays for hands-on science, nature adventures and job skills training! Experience different types of green jobs including trail building, tree work, habitat restoration and environmental education. All successful graduates are guaranteed paid summer work and other job opportunities through age 25.

Eligibility: High school sophomores and juniors


Jr. Greenspaces Restoration & Urban Naturalist Team (Jr. GRUNT)

Jr. GRUNT is a year-round program that connects teens to nature, healthy outdoor adventure, environmental science, stewardship and life and job skills. We partner with Ninth Grade Transition (All Hands Raised) so that Jr. GRUNT participants get high school credit for completing the program.

Eligibility: 8th grade students


Youth Conservation Crew (YCC)

YCC is an environmental job program. Not only will you work hard protecting nature in the City, but you will also discover exciting careers in natural resources, develop job skills, and experience some of the most beautiful places in Oregon. There are five different types of jobs: Community Gardens, Tree Crew, Trail Crew, No Ivy League, and Teen Naturalist Team.

Eligibility: Youth ages 14 through 18


Alumni Internships and Apprenticeships

Alumni of GRUNT, Jr. GRUNT, and Youth Conservation Crew are invited to participate in on-going career guidance and work opportunities through our internships and apprenticeships in natural resource career fields. Contact kelly.rosteck@portlandoregon.gov for more information.

Eligibility: Successful completion of GRUNT, Jr. GRUNT, or YCC, for internships until age 25.
