Adopt-A-Rose Bed

A Rose City
Originally created to serve as a safe haven during World War I for hybrid roses grown in Europe, the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park serves as a testing ground for exceptional roses and has a collection of 9,525 rose bushes representing 610 different rose varieties.

Adopt a Rose Bed Program
Contribute to the beauty and enjoyment of the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park by adopting a rose bed in honor of a loved one or in celebration of a special occasion!

Contribution Amount: $750
To adopt a rose bed, we accept gifts of $750. This contribution is tax-deductible, covers a three-year adoption period, and is applied directly to the care of over 610 different rose varieties. Care includes (but is not limited to) the following activities within the garden:

  • Mowing every week
  • Deadheading roses at least once per week May through October
  • Edging every two weeks
  • Spraying once a month
  • Weeding nine times per year
  • Pruning twice a year
  • Fertilizing once a year

A Personalized Plaque
Your generous contribution includes a small, personalized plaque to be placed next to the rose bed. Below are four options for text to be inscribed on your plaque:

After a trial period of two years, roses that do not perform or adapt well, and those that are no longer commercially available in the United States, are replaced with new varieties. Every year, roses that are available commercially for the first time are also planted. The Adopt a Rose Bed Program includes all rose varieties in the garden that have not been already adopted. If your adopted rose bed fails to thrive, we will move your plaque to another similar variety and continue to honor your donation period. After three years, you will be invited to renew your donation.

If you'd like to adopt one of the many beautiful rose beds at the International Rose Test Garden, please contact our Partnership & Development Coordinator, Jessie Bond, via phone at (503) 823-4131 or email at Jessie.Bond@portlandoregon.gov

Thank you for your interest in the Adopt a Rose Bed Program!
