Westmoreland and Eastmoreland neighborhoods were initially platted in the early 1900s, almost 30 years before the development of Westmoreland Park. Individual lots were sold and custom homes were built in rapid succession at this time. The development of the neighborhood was also tied to excitement surrounding the new Reed College campus. The neighborhoods surrounding Westmoreland Park were largely built-out with single-family homes by the time Westmoreland Park was developed in the 1930s. Newspapers from this time period offer a glimpse into the development rush then, and the optimism with which southeast Portland rapidly changed from a farming community to residential suburbs. Also of note was the growing fascination with air travel and use of the Westmoreland park property as Broomfield air field – one of the first air fields in the Portland region!
