  • Trees are for planting on private property in front, side or back yards (trees may not be planted in containers or in the sidewalk as street trees)
  • Trees must be planted within the City of Portland
  • Limit of two trees per household

Yard Tree Species Information

We offer a variety of trees ranging from medium to large in size, and include native, conifer, evergreen, and deciduous species. Trees will be from 4-6 feet tall and should fit in a car/truck, grocery cart or make a nice companion on the bus!

When choosing a species, please consider the available space in your yard for roots and branches as well as how much sun your yard gets each day.  See the list of available trees here.

Planting Location

Yard trees should be planted a minimum of 15 feet from any side of your house, 2 feet from property lines or 5 feet from a driveway or water meter.  For advice on where in your yard to plant your tree, check out Right Tree, Right Place from the Arbor Day Foundation.

Planting & Care

We will be demonstrating how to plant a tree at the giveaway every hour on the hour so you know exactly how to plant your container tree.  We’ll send you home with free bag of mulch & educational materials that will reinforce our demonstration to help you properly care for your tree.  You can also download and print the guide on Yard Tree Planting and Care.
