The new bridges are compete and open for use.
Preparations for construction of the new bridges at Foley-Balmer and Marshall Park will begin the week of April 8, 2019. In the next few weeks, you may see survey markers, installation of tree protection and construction fencing, and trail closures. Work will be completed by Fall 2019.
The project is currently wrapping up the permitting process. Next, the project will go out for bid, and a contract will be put into place for the construction. PP&R currently anticipates construction to begin in summer 2019 with completion by fall 2019.
In preparation for construction, 10 trees will be removed in early February 2019. The tree removals are carefully timed to happen outside of the bird nesting season. Eight of the trees were identified by the project arborist as dead, hazardous, or nuisance species. Two trees are located where the new bridge footing and trail connections will be. One of the trees removed will be left as a tall snag to provide habitat. As part of the site restoration at the end of construction, 10 new trees and 18 shrubs will be planted.
Thanks to funding from the voter-approved Parks Replacement Bond, this project will replace a bridge in the Foley-Balmer Natural Area and the Owl Creek Bridge in Marshall Park. Both of these bridges have been out of service for several years, and the new bridges will help reconnect popular SW trails.
