Trail Closures

Please see Portland Parks & Recreation's Inclement Weather Policy for additional closure information during extreme weather.

This page was updated on February 21, 2017, 2:12pm

Please use caution when using trails!
Be aware that rain and winter storms can leave trails and roads a bit of a mess with hazards like ice, downed trees, landslides, and flooding. Portland Parks & Recreation addresses weather related impacts as soon as resources allow, but may not be able to respond immediately or forecast where the next downed tree or slide will occur. Please use extra caution on trails and roads!

Columbia Slough Trail
Work on a lagoon reconstruction project located at the Columbia Blvd Wastewater Treatment Plant will take place November 2011-2018. During construction, the Columbia Slough Trail will be intermittently closed. Trail users can detour to Columbia Boulevard south of the plant and the trail segment east of the plant. For more information, please visit the BES Lagoon Reconstruction and Trail Closure Alert.

Marshall Park - Foley-Balmer Natural Area
The bridge across Tryon Creek in the Foley-Balmer Natural Area has been removed due to structural concerns. To detour, please use SW Broadleaf Drive to connect SW Lancaster Road and SW 18th Pl or SW Maplecrest Drive. Please follow the recommended detour. Crossing the creek is unsafe and causes streambank erosion and damage to riparian vegetation.

Forest Park

  • Leif Erickson Drive - A landslide on Leif Erickson Trail at milepost 4.0 is covering a large section of trail. Please use extra caution when passing through this area, as conditions have made the tread very muddy and narrow. There will be intermittent trail closures as we remove the affected trees and slide material from the area.
  • Lower Macleay Trail has been damaged by recent storms and the area is unstable. A landslide has crossed the trail approximately ¼ mile from the NW Upshur Street trailhead. Lower Macleay Trail is CLOSED between NW 29th and Upshur, and the Stone House, due to a landslide. The public must stay out of the area due to unstable slope conditions.
  • Maple Trail in Forest Park remains closed between Koenig Trail and Firelane 4.
  • Wildwood Trail is closed near West Burnside and the Pittock Mansion due to landslide and trail instability.

Marquam Park - Sunnyside and Shelter Loop Trails
A landslide on the Sunnyside Trail between Broadway Trail and the Shelter has made the trail impassable. There is significant damage along the north section of Shelter Loop Trail due to fallen trees. Marquam Trail can be used to bypass these trails. Many other trails have seen damage from the recent winter storms, please use caution on the trails.

Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge

Paved Trail Parking Lot - Two large trees have fallen in Oaks Bottom, covering the parking lot at the top of the paved access trail. Please note that this parking lot will be closed until PP&R Urban Forestry crews can arrive to clear the area.

Sellwood Park trail to Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge - is closed indefinitely due to landslide danger. A small landslide has already occurred and more are possible. PP&R is monitoring the trail for further damage and the possibility of repair.

Powers Marine Park
The access road from Hwy 43 (Macadam Ave) to the former Staff Jennings boat store and the park will be closed permanently for the construction of the Sellwood Bridge. The trail within the park will not be accessible during construction and is planned to reopen in November 2017. Pedestrian and bicycle access along Hwy 43 will remain open, though there will be posted detours throughout the anticipated 4-year construction. For more information, please visit

Springwater Corridor Trail
A detour will be in place on the Springwater Corridor Trail in the vicinity of 5120 SE Johnson Creek Blvd. on Sunday, February 26, from 8am until noon, while permitted work is taking place.

Please use caution on the trail. Some areas could be slippery with ice, especially bridges.

Washington Park
There is significant trail damage due to downed trees on the Wildwood Trail at the Archery Range. Trail users are advised to use caution until the trail can be assessed and repaired.

Willamette Park - Beaver Road, south of the boat ramp parking lot, will be temporarily closed on Saturday, February 18, from 6am – 4pm to complete permitted work. The soccer field, tennis courts, playground and picnic area remain accessible to the public.

Woods Memorial Natural Area – Little Trail
