UFC Committees

Each Urban Forestry Commissioner serves on or chairs at least one committee. Most choose to serve on more than one. There are six standing committees.

Policy Committee

Heritage Tree Committee

Education and Outreach Committee

Recruitment and Nominations Committee

Operations Committee

Appeals Board

Policy Committee

The Policy Committee focuses on issues related to regulations and City policy, serving to prioritize, promote, and monitor activities surrounding City regulations and funding of the urban forestry program.

Heritage Tree Committee

The Heritage Tree Committee works in conjunction with the City Forester and staff to identify, evaluate, and nominate distinctive trees for designation as Heritage Trees. The program seeks particularly to protect old, large, historic, and botanically significant trees.

Education and Outreach Committee

The Education and Outreach Committee seeks to develop and implement programs to inform the public about the values of urban trees, recruit and train citizen-volunteers to actively support urban forestry issues, and recognize individuals and groups that have made notable contributions to urban forest health and expansion.

Recruitment and Nominations Committee

The Recruitment and Nominations Committee ensures that Urban Forestry Commission vacancies are filled in a timely fashion by volunteers with skills that complement the existing Commission's skill set, and identifies candidates every two years for Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary positions.

Operations Committee

The Operations Committee is the executive committee of the Urban Forestry Commission, consisting of the Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary. This committee’s roles include representing the Commission during Portland Parks & Recreation’s budget process, serving on the bureau’s budget advisory committee, setting the monthly commission meeting agenda, writing the annual report, and performing other operational duties.

Appeals Board

The Appeals Board hears and adjudicates disagreements between a citizen’s tree-related request (e.g., removal of a street tree) and a ruling by the City Forester.
