(Portland, OR) –
Kids play for free on Mondays this summer at two Portland Parks Golf facilities starting June 25, 2018
Portland Parks & Recreation’s Portland Parks Golf now offers Free Golf Mondays for junior golfers (kids up to the age of 17) at both the Colwood Golf Center and Eastmoreland Golf Course. Starting Monday, June 25, 2018, junior golfers can play for free from sunrise until 3pm on Mondays this summer until school begins again. This program includes the use of golf clubs for kids during their rounds! Please note that kids ages nine and under must be accompanied by an adult when they play.
The revitalized Colwood Golf Center is located in northeast Portland’s Cully neighborhood and managed by KemperSports. In recent years the property has received notable improvements and been transformed into a haven for both junior and beginner golfers, featuring a 9-hole, par 3 course layout and premier driving range. Colwood Golf Center will also host our free public celebration: “The Next 100 – Celebrating the Future of Portland Parks Golf” on Sunday, August 26, 2018. Please join in the free, family fun!
The historic Eastmoreland Golf Course features an 18-hole course layout, and is entering its second century as part of Portland Parks Golf. The course offers a wide variety of junior golf lessons, as well FREE use of the driving range for kids up to the age of 17, every morning.
“We want junior golfers who are both experienced and brand-new to the game to enjoy Portland Parks Golf facilities even more this summer,” says John Zoller, Portland Parks & Recreation Director of Golf. “Golf is a fun, lifelong game and we are delighted to welcome the next generation of golfers for free, all summer long. We hope it is the start of a lifetime of love for the game in general, and with Portland Parks Golf in particular.”
No reservations are needed nor taken for Free Golf Mondays. Tee times are offered on a walk-up basis every Monday from opening until 3pm based on availability. A reminder that players aged nine and under must be accompanied by an adult on the golf course. The City will evaluate the program’s success, and possibly consider offering free Monday golf for kids up to 17 years of age on an ongoing basis.
A notable tradition in golf’s rich history was that caddies could play the courses at which they worked - on Mondays. Many of today’s avid golfers learned the game and became lifelong enthusiasts after taking advantage of such opportunities. Today, however, very few clubs still offer such occasions, and most are limited to private golf clubs. Portland Parks Golf has noted fewer kids playing golf in recent years, and aims to help reverse that trend, in part by adopting this tradition via Free Golf Mondays for young people. Portland Parks Golf aims to engage and encourage the next generation of golfers and to foster greater diversity in, and access to, the game.
“Hey, golf and kids are good for one another!” smiles Zoller, who has worked for Portland Parks Golf for nearly 40 years.
