Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) is actively seeking a part time staff member to work in various capacities. There is one part-time position open.

This position works closely with the Stewardship Coordinator and provides support to the stewardship program which is a part of City Nature West (CNW).  CNW is a work unit within Portland Parks & Recreation, that works to protect Portland's green assets in an integrated and sustainable way by:

  • Maintaining and enhancing our natural areas and urban forest for their environmental benefits.

  • Conserving ecosystem and bio-diversity traits of the system.

  • Providing environmental education and stewardship opportunities for the community.

  • Ensuring safe, accessible and low impact means for people to connect with nature.

 
The Stewardship Program Support Staff, will engage volunteers in an outdoor setting performing restoration work in PP&R natural areas. Activities will include removing invasive plant species, planting native plants, trail maintenance and other associated tasks. Staff will teach the public proper safety techniques performed with each task. They will inform the public about the history of our Stewardship Program and the importance of what we do.  Staff will spend time doing office work and tool maintenance to support this program.
Work Duties will include:

  • Lead and engage volunteers, school groups and other public groups in restoration projects in PP&R's natural areas

  • Lead weekday and Saturday volunteer events in partnership with our Friends/Partners volunteer events

  • Educate the public about the importance/history of PP&R's No Ivy League and the restoration work in our natural areas

  • Provide background information about the natural area parks to help connect volunteers to our natural areas and parks

  • Provide supervision to volunteers in the field to ensure safety

  • Provide direction and techniques to volunteers about the specific project at each event, i.e. give tool safety talk, background on project whether related to trail work or restoration work, provide boundaries for work, give demonstration on task at hand, over see volunteers throughout each event

  • Assist with No Ivy Day planning scheduled in October each year

  • Outreach and recruit volunteers for No Ivy League and westside stewardship events

  • Office duties such as data entry, organize field house, check phone messages, verify volunteers, send monthly volunteer email, create and send quarterly newsletter in collaboration with all stewardship coordinators, research for website and quality control

  • Maintaining equipment by completing preventive maintenance

 
Skills & Knowledge:

  • Experience working with volunteers

  • Strong teamwork and leadership skills

  • Strong and effective oral and written communication

  • Knowledge of Pacific northwest ecosystems, flora, and fauna

  • Knowledge of restoration principles and techniques

  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft word, excel, spreadsheet and email

Compensation:        $13-16/hour DOE
Benefit:                     This position is not eligible for benefits
Hours:                       Part-time (16 hours/week) including every Saturday
