City of Portland hosts event on 5/15 to recognize 70th anniversary of Vanport Flood

The event takes place Tuesday, May 15, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Portland City Hall, First Floor (1221 SW 4th Ave, Portland OR 97204).

Vanport FloodOn May 30, 1948, the Vanport Flood killed 15 people, left 18,000 homeless, and displaced a large African American community in what is now North Portland. There is much we can learn from what happened at Vanport as we work to build a more disaster-resilient and equitable community.

On Tuesday, May 15 the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management (PBEM) is hosting an event at Portland City Hall to commemorate the flood's 70th anniversary and showcase an exhibit from the Vanport Mosaic Festival taking place May 23-28.

Local media are invited to attend the event from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. featuring remarks from Commissioner Chloe Eudaly, PBEM Director Courtney Patterson, Vanport flood survivors, jazz music from the Ron Steen Trio, and free food from Kee's #Loaded Kitchen.
