Description

On May 25-28, 2018 The Vanport Mosaic will commemorate Vanport City, and the 70th anniversary of the flood that destroyed it, with exhibits, theater performances, a reunion/celebration of former Vanport residents, documentary screenings and recordings, poetry, tours of the historic Vanport City area and community engagement activities.

Flood survivors are now in their 80s and 90s, so the Festival is a long-overdue opportunity to honor their experience, and learn from it. The 70th anniversary of the flood, especially in light of the devastating impact of the recent hurricanes that battered the Atlantic and Caribbean, will offer a timely opportunity to reflect on the state of emergency preparedness of our city, particularly on how disasters they create often replicate and deepen social inequalities.

As 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act and we continue to explore our complicated past while we grapple with the current housing crisis, the Festival narratives and dialogues will invite us to recommit to eliminate housing discrimination and create equal opportunity in every community.

This 4-day multi-disciplinary event was awarded the Oregon Heritage Excellence Award 2017, the Spirit of Portland Award by City Commissioner Nick Fish, and the Columbia Slough Watershed Council’s Achievement Award.

Thanks to our advocacy effort, Gov. Kate Brown, Sen. Jackie Winters, House Speaker Tina Kotek, Portland Mayors Charles Hales and Ted Wheeler, have proclaimed a Vanport Day of Remembrance on the anniversary of the flood.
