What does discrimination in housing look like? Through videos and high-quality photos, local residents told their own stories about facing discrimination in housing, transportation, community building and hunger.
Community Alliance of Tenants (CAT) teamed up with Coalition for a Livable Future (CLF) to create the Equity Stories Project.
CAT partners with Portland Housing Bureau on its Renters Rights Hotline. The hotline helps tenants learn their rights and identifies households in need of habitability repairs related to mold and lead.
Several CAT members and Safe Housing Project participants took part in the Equity Stories Project. The stories illustrate the need to continue finding solutions for those experiencing discrimination. Of the 20 tenants that participated in the project, many were denied services or their location choice was compromised for reasons that were not overt fair housing violations. Because of multiple barriers, such as language, others hesitated to file formal complaints.
