The Portland Police Bureau fully supports body cameras.
On August 3, 2021, Mayor Ted Wheeler issued the following statement on body worn cameras:
History of the body worn camera project: The City Council voted to defund the Body Worn Camera program beginning fiscal year 2020-21 (July 1, 2020) due to major budget constraints—the City was facing a $75 million shortfall. It is important to note this program was being developed as a pilot and implementation had not yet begun. PPB had engaged in a number of community forums as part of the planning for the pilot program.
PPB encourages community members to share your perspective with elected officials if you feel this is an important program.
