Case #88-40511
View KPTV's story on this Cold Case.
On April 22, 1988, a garbage man working his route saw smoke coming from 7625 SE 21st Avenue at approximately 6 a.m. He tried to enter the residence, but could not because of the smoke. He asked the neighbors to call 911 and the Fire Bureau responded. Inside the residence, firemen discovered the body of Grace Turel.
Grace Turel was a 77-year-old widow who lived alone; her husband died two years before. According to neighbors, Grace Turel was security conscious and normally kept her doors locked and would not open her door to strangers.
Grace Turel did not die easy. She was assaulted prior to the arson fire at her residence. Based on evidence recovered at the crime scene, robbery does not appear to be a motive.
