New Police Bureau Policies

Today, Portland Chief of Police Michael Reese released three new policies: Use of Force, Electronic Control Weapon Systems (Taser), and Satisfactory Performance. Elements of these policies relate directly to the City of Portland's 2012 settlement agreement with the Department of Justice (DOJ) concerning the DOJ's investigation into the use of force in the Portland Police Bureau.

During this year’s in-service, members were trained on the new force and taser policies. During the course of the year, PPB leadership asked for PPB member feedback on these policies, which led to some minor changes. You can view the final drafts of these policies at the following links:

1. Directive 1010.00: Use of Force

2. Directive 1051.00: Electronic Control Weapon Systems (Taser)

3. Directive 315.30: Satisfactory Performance

In addition to having been publicly available since February, 2013, these policies have been vetted through City Hall, DOJ, and the two unions representing sworn police officers. PPB sworn personnel are currently reviewing the final drafts, which will become effective on January 1, 2014.

If you have comments or questions for the DOJ Compliance team regarding these policies, leave a comment in the comments section below and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
