Community Policing Spotlight: April 14, 2017

Officers perform community policing continually throughout their day, but sometimes we highlight some of the more interesting or significant events:

This week a local Rabbi explained to officers that a tradition during Passover is to for children to search the house with flashlights to ensure all leavened bread has been removed from the house.  The Rabbi asked officers if they could come by some houses in his neighborhood and say they are searching for leavened bread.

Central Officers knocked on a few homes within the Jewish community asking the children if they had found all of the leavened bread within their houses and had a great time talking with the families. The children and parents said they appreciated officers had taken the time to be a part of this tradition.

Walking Beat:
East Precinct officers continue to perform walking beats, and recently, for three nights, they went out with goal of contacting local businesses and restaurants along SE Hawthorne Blvd as well as locations along SE Stark from SE 77th-80th. The officers have developed good relationships with various businesses and the community since this project began.

Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) Program:
GREAT recently celebrated with Parkrose Middle School 6th grade students. 255 students spent 13 weeks with GREAT-certified Instructors learning about goal-setting, responding to peer pressure, resolving conflicts, and more. Every student received a certificate and T-shirt (and pizza!).  GREAT also hopes the kids realize they now have a connection with a Portland Police officer, who they can turn to if needed.
