UPDATE: Crash Victims Identified, Suspect Charged (Photo)

The two individuals who died as a result of this crash are juveniles identified as 16-year-old Onesty L Jones and 13-year-old Kamareon Smith.

After an exhaustive investigation, and in coordination with the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, the driver of the vehicle that caused this crash has been charged. He is identified as 18-year-old Julius Whitehurst. Whitehurst was arrested on July 24, 2023, on the unrelated charges of Attempted Murder, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in association with a shooting detailed in this press release: https://www.portlandoregon.gov/police/news/read.cfm?id=493013 .

Whitehurst faces 14 additional charges associated with the crash. The new charges include:

Manslaughter in the First Degree (2 Counts);
Assault in the Second Degree (1 Count);
Assault in the Third Degree (3 Counts);
Failure to Perform Duties of a Driver with a Fatality (2 Counts);
Failure to Perform Duties of a Driver with Injuries (4 Counts);
Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (1 Count); and
Reckless Driving (1 Count).

A crash investigation is underway in the Lents Neighborhood where 2 people were killed and 2 more went to the hospital with injuries.

On Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at 9:40p.m., East Precinct officers responded to a crash at Southeast Foster Road and Southeast 96th Avenue, which is at the onramp from Southeast Foster Road to northbound I-205. When they arrived they found a 2-vehicle rollover crash. Two people were deceased on scene. Two other patients were transported to hospitals by ambulance.

The Portland Police Traffic Division’s Major Crash Team is on scene investigating the crash. During the investigation, Southeast Foster Road and Southeast Woodstock Boulevard are closed between Southeast 94th Avenue and Southeast 101st Avenue. Additionally, the off ramp from northbound I-205 to Southeast Woodstock Boulevard and Southeast Foster Road is closed. The off ramp from southbound I-205 is open but motorists can only go west on Southeast Foster Road.
